Summer Sky Counselling
How I Work: An Integrative Approach
I am an Integrative Counselor, which means I use a range of theories and techniques to suit your specific needs. My practice is primarily rooted in Person-Centred and Psychodynamic methods, supported by Transpersonal and Transactional Analysis perspectives.
The Therapeutic Relationship
I consider our relationship the vehicle that encourages growth. Fundamental to my approach is the belief that we are all innately decent and desire to feel good about ourselves and connected to those around us. If you feel valued, safe, and understood, then you will be able to flourish.
I work in a Person-Centered manner, which means you are free to decide what to bring to each session. I accept that our work will move at your pace and recognise that you know what is best for you.
Encouraging Insight and Acceptance
Using a Psychodynamic lens, I work with how you currently feel, the experiences that have shaped you, and what you believe about yourself. I may draw attention to aspects of your past that are affecting your present, helping you recognise the subconscious processes that shape your thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.
This includes recognising how our defence mechanisms developed in response to our environment. By understanding that these mechanisms were once necessary, we can learn to accept ourselves without repressing or denying any part of our personalities.
Meaning and Growth
My approach focuses on finding meaning and purpose to facilitate growth in whatever manner best suits you. To offer a truly holistic perspective, I draw on:
- Transactional Analysis: Helping us understand the "scripts" and patterns of how we relate to ourselves and others.
- Transpersonal Counselling: A spiritual approach that views us not as "broken," but as individuals facing challenges that serve a purpose.
These obstacles direct our attention to areas of our life that require it; by examining them, we can heal past wounds, learn our true values, and find the path we wish to follow.
